How It Works

ClerkCheck is a modular citation engine. Upload a PDF and it generates a Bluebook-compliant citation. Each additional input you provide — an excerpt, a draft — refines the output further. Only the source document is required.

01. Source Document (Required)

Upload the PDF of the authority you are citing. ClerkCheck supports court opinions, statutes, law review articles, briefs, transcripts, books, and treatises. The document type is auto-detected, but you can override it using the dropdown below the upload area if needed.

02. Excerpt to be Cited (Optional)

Paste the exact text you want to reference. ClerkCheck will locate that passage in the PDF, identify the correct page number, and append a pinpoint citation (e.g., at 542) automatically. Without an excerpt, the citation omits the pinpoint.

03. Draft Context (Optional)

Paste your brief or memo up to the insertion point in the draft area below. ClerkCheck scans it for prior citations and determines whether to produce a Full Citation, a Short Form, or an Id. — so the citation drops into your document correctly on the first try.

04. Citation Style

Use the style dropdown to select your jurisdiction's citation format. Federal Authority Style is the default and follows standard Bluebook rules for federal courts.
