Privacy Policy
Effective March 8, 2026
ClerkCheck is a free legal citation generator operated by The Retrieval Company. This policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and your rights regarding that information.
Information We Collect
When you use ClerkCheck, we may collect the following information:
- Uploaded PDF files. You upload PDF documents so that we can extract citation information. These files are processed in memory and are not stored on our servers after processing is complete.
- IP addresses. We log IP addresses for rate limiting and abuse prevention purposes. These logs are retained for no more than 30 days.
- Usage data. We may collect basic, non-identifying usage data such as request timestamps and response times to monitor service health.
- Feedback data. If you choose to submit feedback on a generated citation (thumbs up or thumbs down), we collect the citation text, extraction metadata, the uploaded PDF, and any optional comments you provide. This data helps us diagnose issues and improve citation accuracy.
- Parenthetical generator data. When you use the parenthetical generator, we collect the inputs you provide (proposition, excerpt, PDF) and the generated outputs. We also collect how you interact with generated results. This data is used to improve the service.
How We Use Your Information
We use the information we collect solely to provide and improve the ClerkCheck service:
- PDF content is analyzed to extract citation metadata (case names, reporters, dates, etc.).
- When our automated extraction cannot determine all required citation fields, the extracted text may be sent to a third-party large language model (Google Gemini) to fill in missing information. Only the minimum necessary text is sent.
- IP addresses are used to enforce rate limits and prevent abuse of the service.
- Feedback data, including reported citation errors and associated PDFs, is reviewed by our team to diagnose issues and improve the accuracy of the citation generation service.
- Parenthetical generator inputs and outputs are used to evaluate and improve the quality of the service.
Data Retention
- PDF files: Files are processed in memory and discarded immediately after the citation is generated. However, if you submit feedback (positive or negative), the PDF is stored to help us analyze and improve citation accuracy. These PDFs are retained only as long as needed for service improvement purposes.
- Generated citations: Not stored on our servers unless you submit feedback. Citations are stored in your browser's local session and are cleared when you close the tab. If you submit feedback, the citation text and metadata are stored to help us improve the service.
- Feedback data: Feedback submissions (ratings, comments, and associated PDFs) are stored indefinitely to support ongoing service improvement. You may contact us to request deletion of specific feedback records.
- Parenthetical data: Inputs, generated outputs, and interaction data from the parenthetical generator are stored indefinitely for service improvement. You may contact us to request deletion.
- IP logs: Retained for up to 30 days for rate limiting and security purposes.
Third-Party Services
ClerkCheck uses the following third-party service:
- Google Gemini API. We send the minimum necessary text to Google's Gemini API for citation analysis and parenthetical generation. This data is subject to Google's API Terms of Service.
- Supabase. Feedback data, parenthetical generation sessions, and associated PDFs are stored using Supabase, a cloud database service. This data is subject to Supabase's Privacy Policy.
Cookies and Tracking
ClerkCheck does not use cookies, analytics trackers, or any third-party tracking scripts. We do not track your browsing activity across websites.
User Accounts
ClerkCheck does not require or offer user accounts. You can use the service without providing any personal information beyond the PDF you choose to upload.
Children's Privacy
ClerkCheck is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, please contact us and we will delete it promptly.
Your Rights
If you have submitted feedback, you may request access to, correction of, or deletion of your feedback data by contacting us at the address below. For other data we may hold (such as IP logs), you may also contact us with questions.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this privacy policy from time to time. Changes will be reflected on this page with an updated effective date. Continued use of ClerkCheck after changes constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
